Speculations on acoustosomatis

We explore how listening transcends when it is understood and applied beyond acoustic apprehension as listening to place, body, memory and the imaginary. We investigate the potential of hybridizing, incorporating, and translating our diverse artistic methods and practices from the perspectives of dance, sound art, music, and choreography. Under this premise, we explore scripting, choreographing, hosting performance situations, and composing to mediate a variety of listening practices.

Aim and research questions

This cluster project aims to examine how sound and dance artists may develop artistic methods and formats that engage an audience via embodied, experience-centered listening modes. How can listening serve as a method for collaboration across choreographic and sonic practices? How can artistic affinities be a starting point for developing practices that emerge from engaging with the different conceptual frameworks, assumptions, and diverse artistic applications of listening in each discipline without obliterating the particularities of each?

Research implementation and anticipated impact

The researchers involved in the project will work in intensive phases in different constellations. Research findings and artistic works will be shared through workshops and other forms of audience engagement. The project will contribute knowledge regarding discipline-crossing formats of audience engagement via sonic and bodily practices. The project aims to open new perspectives on the conception and implementation of multi-layered listening practices and composition methods, which are useful for collaborative practices and educational contexts across disciplines.

Collaboration

Cross-disciplinary collaboration and the changing constellations of researchers are vital aspects of this research cluster, enabling the confluence of a wide range of methods and practices within their respective fields to be investigated and expanded. Beyond the context of SKH, the project will also take place on the premises of EMS Electronic Music Studio Stockholm, Fylkingen New Music and Intermedia, MDT Modern Dance Theatre, and Hallen i Farsta.
