You See? This Is How You —

Jade Stenhuijs
""

Here the space is a morphing narrative, where stories are delayed, layered over each other, or audible elsewhere at times. Sometimes deduced to an image. Objects absorb stories and act as a sounding board. A gathering of different occurrences, bending what took place.

Rather than a chronological account, it is a collage where things fall out and start a life of their own. An effort to find a tone of voice and transitions that evoke the quality of dreams. A dance project as a cover to learn more about one’s family heritage, to share with a beloved. To think like a dream, materialize in places, shift between appearances, and make (dream)sense. The creation of a dance performance, to make time to think and play around with possibilities, a reflection on how to move forward.

This performance is a collection of dreams, recorded from pregnancy until the first year and a half after birth. The characters that visit this mother’s sleep share their stories, as they dance with exit signs, spend time with Surinamese Indigenous dream practices, in a former ossuary turned theatre, and transform into watercolours, a thermofoil, fertility statues, cats, make labor positions, some gestures, a dream.

Bio Jade Stenhuijs

Jade Stenhuijs is a dancer and choreographer from The Netherlands, with Surinamese roots.

She is interested in the idea that a space is made with intention and therefore has a perspective; it is made, used in a specific way, visited, sometimes forgotten. Actions that make it what it is. By working and creating in it, she also weaves in her own actions, until it is not anymore about the place exactly as it is, and neither the place that she is, but something between reality and fiction that is done together all the time.
