Nour El-Ain (نور العين)
"Maybe the movie isn’t so important anymore, texts MA. We were supposed to watch a Ziad El-Rahbani movie at a theater that evening.
Did the conversation yesterday turn you on? I text back.
And that as well, MA answers.”
For two years, I went on dates exclusively with Arab men. I was convincing myself, for research, to counter the discourse of the systematic dehumanization of their faces in Western media. In reality, for two years, I was on a healing journey with my fragmented identity and the withdrawn traditions. While trying to reimagine how we, Arab speakers, can meet and love while carrying our patriarchal, colonial, and societal wounds. Nour El-Ain is a ceremony where my dances are offerings for love, those who are present, and my coordinates of belonging.
