Political Strategies in Contemporary Performance

Political Strategies in Contemporary Performance

Are you interested in the political potential contemporary performance? Do you know of the political challenges facing the performing arts today? In this course you will discuss and analyse such challenges, as well as develop political strategies to counter them.

This course explores and discusses recent and potential political strategies within the contemporary performance field. Through meetings with artists, dramaturges and scholars, by discussing texts and performances, and by producing your own written or mediated material, you will be able to identify and discuss some of the main challenges facing any political art work today, as well as to develop and discuss some strategies to counter them.

Key questions you will work on are: What potential does art have to address/discuss polarisation in society? How can art function as a negotiation space for political issues? What role can art play in the democratic process? What can the relationship between art and activism look like today?
