Political Strategies in Contemporary Performance

Are you interested in the political potential contemporary performance? Do you know of the political challenges facing the performing arts today? In this course you will discuss and analyse such challenges, as well as develop political strategies to counter them.

This course explores and discusses recent and potential political strategies on the contemporary performance field. Through meetings with artists, dramaturges and critics, by studying writings and performances, and by producing own written or mediated material, you will be able to identify and discuss some of the main challenges facing any political art work today, as well as to develop and discuss some strategies to counter them.

Central questions to the course are: what is art´s potential to address polarization in society? How can art be a negotiaton space for political issues and discourses? What role does art perform in contemporary democracy? What is the relationship between art and activism?
