Black Study as Creative Process

Black Study as Creative Process

Are you interested in how U.S. Black Studies can deepen your artistic practice? Is the concept of blackness, its embodiment or performance in the world, a key figure in your practice, pedagogy or research?

The course gives you the opportunity to formulate your own artistic problems and questions through the critical lens that Black Study offers. Black Study puts forward the claim that race is still operative as an ideological function in society today despite attempts to remove the concept from discourse. It gives you the opportunity to take a deep, creative dive into difficult texts by allowing you to read them through your artistic practice (circus, dance or performing arts).

The reading is based on experience and artistic practice, rather than academic or scholarly expertise.

This course is aimed at you who has an artistic practice that centers the embodiment of black/brown-being-in-the-world.

You will explore AfroFuturism, history from a black perspective, Black Radical Feminisms, AfroOptimism and AfroPessimism in relation to the black body that shapes and creates art.

The course will focus on the work and experiences, thoughts and philosophies of Black (including Black mixed, Brown and Global Majority) artists and thinkers.

If you have any questions before applying, you are welcome to contact the course director.
