Black Study as Creative Process

Black Study as Creative Process

Are you interested in how U.S. Black Studies can deepen your artistic practice? Is the concept of blackness, its embodiment or performance in the world, a key figure in your practice, pedagogy or research?

The course enables you to articulate your own artistic concerns/questions through the critical lens that Black Study offers. It will allow you to take a deep, creative dive into difficult texts by allowing you to read them through your artistic practice (circus, dance or performance) and understanding of being-black-in-the-world. Readings are based on experience and artistic practice, rather than academic or scholarly skill.

You will explore AfroFuturism, History from Black perspectives, Black Radical Feminisms, AfroOptimism and AfroPessimism in relation to the black body performing and creating art.

The course will centre the work and experience, thought and philosophies of Black (including Black-mixed, Brown and global majority) artists and thinkers. Please be mindful of how you enter and participate in the course if you belong to another or adjacent community group.

Teachers

The course is led by John-Paul Zaccarini, Professor of Performing Arts for the research profile Bodily and Vocal Practices and director of FutureBrownSpace. Guest teachers to be announced.
