Stockholm University of the Arts (SKH) offers the course Doctoral Supervision in Artistic Research for those who wish to deepen and develop their skills as supervisors in artistic research education.

Doctoral Supervision in Artistic Research (3 ECTS)

SKH offers the course Doctoral Supervision in Artistic Research – one of the few courses specifically dedicated to supervision within artistic research. 
The course is open for supervisors in artistic doctoral programmes at Swedish higher education institutions, (internal and external) supervisors at SKH, SKH staff interested in doctoral supervision in artistic research and alumni from SKH’s doctoral programme. 

Course Overview

The course is offered as professional development and consists of four three-hour seminars with short preparatory assignments. 

Content:

  • Framing: contexts, documents, roles, and responsibilities in artistic research supervision 
  • Ethics: unfolding ethics in the context of doctoral supervision in artistic research
  • Experiential Knowledges: systems, procedures, and conventions, experiences in artistic research supervision
  • Communities of Practice: the supervisory role in relation to situating a doctoral project within institutional, local, Nordic and international artistic research and art form contexts. Who are the people invited into the project and what perspectives do they bring?

Seminar 1: 17 September, 13:00–16:00
Seminar 2: 15 October, 13:00–16:00 (task due 8 October)
Seminar 3: 19 November, 13:00–16:00 (task due 12 November)
Seminar 4: 3 December, 13:00–16:00 (task due 26 November)
Venue: Loftet. Teknikringen 35, Stockholm
Language: English

Participants must

  • be admitted as supervisor for doctoral students in artistic research or able to demonstrate a pedagogical competence level equivalent to associate professor or an artistic or academic practice relevant to artistic research and third cycle education.
  • have good knowledge of English, both oral and written.

Selection criteria

Maximum 24 participants. Admission is guaranteed first to main supervisors, then to supervisors of doctoral students at SKH. Additional applicants are selected based on written applications and relevance to artistic doctoral research.

Participation Fee

7000 SEK for applicants employed at other higher education institutions who are not supervising SKH doctoral students. A confirmation from the line manager must be included.
No fee for supervisors currently supervising SKH doctoral students, SKH staff and SKH doctoral alumni not employed at other higher education institutions.

How to Apply

Deadline: 10 April 2026
Submit an expression of interest by email to Research Officer: 
Jenny Tyllström. 

Please include:
1.    A short motivation (approx. 200 words).
2.    Information on whether you currently supervise doctoral students.
3.    A confirmation from your line manager approving your course participation.
4.    For external applicants: a short CV (max 1 page) documenting that you meet the eligibility requirements (e.g. employment certificate, doctoral degree, supervisor's certificate).
5.    If you do not have an active Uniarts account: date of birth/ID number, legal gender, private email and phone number.
