Tender Motor

"Tender motor" is a research project by Tove Salmgren, Moa Franzén and Kajsa Wadhia. The group has worked with choreographic investigations in several projects since 2018, where they investigate in different ways the connection between voice, body and movement.
Three people are sitting on the floor of a dance studio, shaking their heads so that their hair obscures their faces. At the same time, all three are holding a wig in each hand, which they shake in a similar manner.

In the current research project "Tender motor" repetition and mutation are explored as methods to search, cross and disrupt binary expressions. Through practices and influences such as acousmatic voice, metal choreographies, the machine/engine, creaturely voice and femininely connoted expressions, voices and bodies that can challenge the idea of "human" expression in a different/more-than-human landscape are explored. "Motor" comes from the Latin "movere" which means "to move" - the one or that which sets something in motion. In the project, the relay is explored as a structure to unite and replace each other, which can also be compared to an engine, or machine. The research is based on examining and following the mutations, figures and vocal bodies that arise through time, space, sound and movement from an audiovisual horizon.

Aim and research questions

To research voices and bodies that can challenge the idea of "human" expression in a different/more-than-human landscape. How does the human expression leak through into the more-than-human, and where does the more-than-human expression leak through into the human?

Research implementation and anticipated impact

Ongoing process work in studio during spring, summer, and autumn 2024, with shorter residencies at SKH, Weld and Köttinspektionen in Uppsala. In June, a process work will be shown at Köttinspektionen. Furthermore, the group will produce a publication that collects and reflects around the group's research questions and methods over the period 2018-2024, which includes the research works titled "From a Throat of Flesh” (2018), “When dancing was done with the lungs” (2022) and the current research “Tender Motor”( 2024). Graphic design by Jonas Williamsson. The project is expected to expand the local discourse and knowledge on the intersection of choreography, voice and movement.

Collaboration

We collaborate with Weld and Köttinspektionen, with regular residencies and to share our research during the process.
