The persona of this event

A PhD project by Anna Frida Maria Nilsson.
Humans running up a golden hill ready to throw themselves into (an abyss?)...

I feel an urgency to research contemporary circus as live performance, because I believe live performance has the power to bridge people through empathy and emotion, and that it holds value in our, now increasingly, screen-driven society. My research feeds on how the Persona of a live performance influences the artists, their physical movements, their state of mind and theatrical performance. By ”Persona of the performance” I understand the composition of the event; it’s length in time, by which methods it has been created, the ephemeral nature of it, the audience’s presence/number/positioning, the number of artists on stage and their energy level, costume agency, musical dramaturgy, set design, state of light etc. This artistic research project will be thought and enacted through the lens of circus practice, in which I have my roots.

Aim and research questions

Research topic: Improvisation methods for circus creation and performance. Question: Invite immersee? Introspection: Define this breeding ground.
