Working title: Immersive creation?

A PhD project by Anna Frida Maria Nilsson.

I feel an urgency to research contemporary circus as live performance, because I believe live performance has the power to bridge people through empathy and emotion, and that it holds value in our, now increasingly, screen-driven society. My research feeds on how the Persona of a live performance influences the artists, their physical movements, their state of mind and theatrical performance. By ”Persona of the performance” I understand the composition of the event; it’s length in time, by which methods it has been created, the ephemeral nature of it, the audience’s presence/number/positioning, the number of artists on stage and their energy level, costume agency, musical dramaturgy, set design, state of light etc. This artistic research project will be thought and enacted through the lens of circus practice, in which I have my roots.

Aim and research questions

The goal of this research is to contribute to new methods of creating live circus performance. Can an immersive state be a state of hightened attention? How to reach and stay in this state? What is needed as a breeding ground in order to become immersed? Is it possible to perform circus technique in a safe way, while in an immersive state?

Research implementation and anticipated impact

The project is expected to be implemented through experiments and their analysis.
