The seminar is part of the seminar series “Ways of knowing Spring 2025” where we every Wednesday this Spring explore how Ways of Knowing manifest themselves in the field of artistic research right now. Read more about the seminar series and find upcoming seminars.

This practice-based research uses artistic methods to explore the creative potential of 1.) instructions (seen broadly as scripts, scores, conventions, blueprints for everyday life actions, etc.) as a material, and 2.) documentary storytelling / story-making processes. Brett looks at how to interweave the two, in order to propose ways that people might consider undertaking to embody their own, and/or their community’s, ethical and aesthetic values.

The 50% seminar (”50%” refers to progress towards the completion of the PhD project) will focus on Brett Ascarellis research in progress, which has included audio documentation, artifacts produced during collaborative work, creative non-fiction writing, and explorations that have to do with instructions.

Brett is undertaking her research in the subject area of Film and Media at SKH.

The seminar will take place on Wednesday, 14 May at 13:00–16:00 with a brief reception afterwards.

Opponent: Daniel Kane, Professor of American literature at Uppsala University’s Department of English.
Supervisors: Tinna Joné, Head of subject area Film and Media, Assistant Professor of Documentary Storytelling, SKH, Sher Doruff, Professor of Film and Media, SKH.
