This event builds on the premise of the Radical Ocean Futures Project that sometimes science fiction might succeed where scientific papers fall short. At this event, participants will be invited to experience three short films about the future ocean: M.A.NA, HAVSRÅ and MATSYA. How can we take action in order to work collectively towards a more sustainable ocean if we lack visionary and compelling imaginaries of alternate futures that engage us and spark our own imaginations? This approach aims to galvanise our collective agency to transform these visions into reality or to take decisions to steer away from them, driving bold strategies and policies for not only envisioning but also acting to safeguard the future of our planet’s largest and  most important ecosystem.

Following the screening there will be an opportunity to discuss the films, the future ocean and the role arts, media, culture and science-based storytelling to radically reimagine the future of our ocean and more broadly contribute to narratives and action around sustainable futures.

This project, ‘Ocean Futurisms’ is a unique collaboration between Radical Ocean Futures, TBA21 and Inferstudio.

Can we build a sustainable ocean future without imaginaries that spark collective action?
Short films
M.A.NA - What could a future blue economy look like that valued life rather than death?
HAVSRÅ - What might activism around deep sea mining and other environmental challenges look like in the future?
MATSYA - Who gets to own the genetic wealth of our oceans in the future?

The event is a collaboration with Maria Lindeman through her current PhD project Towards collaborative and explorative processes in opera and the upcoming performance Sea of Life.

More context on the films and the debut of the project ahead of the recent UN ocean conference held in Nice, France.
