Introduction to Rigging and Safety for Circus Education

This course is aimed at those who are working with education in circus or other performing arts and want to learn about circus rigging and equipment. The purpose of this course is to broaden rigging and safety knowledge and provide basic guidance so teachers can navigate responsibilities and risks connected to rigging for circus and assess the safety of equipment used for teaching circus.

This course provides a basic introduction to working with circus rigging in an educational environment, with a particular focus on teaching children and youth.

The course introduces materials, equipment, and terminology used in circus rigging. Students will approach basic examples of emergent good practices and gain practical experience by rigging commonly used equipment, and combinations thereof. Students also analyze responsibilities relating to safety in rigging for an education environment and the safe handling of materials and equipment.

The course is taught by field experts in circus rigging and is based in the knowledge and protocols of SKH circus, which have been developed through collaboration with circus schools around the world.

Course director

Erik Nyberg is the course director. Erik is a circus teacher and teacher educator with experience of teaching in Kulturskolan (Stockholm School of the Arts).
