Film as Artistic Research - Aesthetics of Resistance

Film as Artistic Research - Aesthetics of Resistance

This course is for filmmakers and artists engaging in lens-based visual practices who would like to broaden their understanding of research in film and read their own practice through this genealogy.

Film as Artistic Research - Aesthetics of Resistance is a course designed around Hito Steyerl’s essay Aesthetics of Resistance from 2010. The course aims to unfold the main premise of the essay by exploring artistic research as a method that existed in various politically engaged film practices around the world over the 20th century.

The course takes you into a journey in time and space towards the suburbs of our filmic heritage, to trace early forms of artistic research practices in film. By looking into historical and contemporary examples you will trace a genealogy of practices expanding the aesthetic boundaries of film as a medium. Artistic research in film moves beyond an academic disciplin and as part of a politically engaged art practice.
