Interview with Ben Collis
Ben Collis is a student at the Bachelor's Programme in Circus.
What are you studying at Uniarts?
I am in the second year of the Bachelor's programme in Circus at DOCH/Uniarts.
What made you choose this programme?
I chose the Circus education at DOCH and Uniarts because it is among the best in the world. The teachers are renowned, the facilities are the best, the learning environment is exceptional. I want to work at the highest level in my field, for as long as possible, and DOCH is the best way I can think of to make that happen, because of the excellent training and the care they take of students.
I came to the course quite old compared to most in my field (28). I honestly was surprised I even got to audition, but now here I am 2 years later. Because DOCH accepts students based on merit and potential, not on arbitrary age categories, they accepted me.
So far the education is even better than I expected!
Is there anything in your education you would you like to highlight?
At DOCH we get a well-rounded education in Circus, including theatre, dance, health, production and rigging, among other things. The intention is to make us capable professional artists. A lot of people might not know that Circus has evolved a lot from the days of glitter, sawdust and animals (though those circuses still exist). The Circus we create has more in common with physical theatre, dance and performance art, with the added thrill that only circus can bring.
Have you got any advice for those who would like to study at Uniarts?
My advice is that you are NOT too old/young/inexperienced/unfit/whatever else you have been told in the past. Go for it! It worked for me.
Anything else you would like to share?
I specialise in Partner Acrobatics with my flyer Elisabeth Künkele. You can find us on Instagram and Facebook @analogueacrobatics
