Art Talks – Conflicted Works
How can we understand the relationship between the arts world and a rapidly changing society? That is the topic of "Art Talks – Conflicted Works", a series of public discussions arranged by Stockholm University of the Arts in cooperation with Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.
This autumn, the focus is on the increased pressure faced by artists under the scrutiny of preconceived political agendas, sometimes escalating to threats and even violence.
In the first seminar we look back at the huge media furore surrounding Norwegian play Ways of Seeing in 2019, which resulted in police investigation of the artists, and ultimately in the resignation of the Norwegian Minister of Justice. What is it about the way society works today that stokes the fires of this and other burning debates?
Hanan Benammar is, together with Sarah Baban and Pia Maria Roll, one of the artists behind Ways of Seeing. Oslo-based Benammar works conceptually with geopolitical issues, focused on climate and social issues.
Tore Slaatta, Professor of social sciences at Oslo Metropolitan University.
The discussion is led by Tinna Joné, Assistant Professor of documentary storytelling at the Department of Film and Media, Stockholm University of the Arts.
The discussion is held in English, and most participants are present via a digital link.
