Cinema Queer at Uniarts
The film festival Cinema Queer returns to the National Board of Health and Welfare´s staircase.
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
Occupation of the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) 1979
"We are angry, not kind, we are gay. Now the stamp of illness will be gone, otherwise the process will be short!"
In 1979, the National Board of Health and Welfare´s staircase was occupied by a group of angry activists who demanded that homosexuality be stopped classified as a disease in Sweden. As a result of the occupation, the then Director of National Board of Health and Welfare, Barbro Westerholm, within a few weeks passed the decision to not classify homosexuality as a sickness. Now, 40 years later, Cinema Queer returns to this historically important place, showing the American documentary Gay USA (1979), as a tribute to international solidarity and all the activists who paved the way.
The staircase is located at Linnégatan 87 and now belongs to Stockholm University of the Arts.
The Cinema Queer Film Festival runs September 24-29. Read more about the festival and the program
